Is Whatsapp Secure?

Is Whatsapp secure? It seems like a lot of people have been asking this question lately, as a series of security breaches have left the messaging app scrambling to fix its security vulnerabilities.

Virtually all of the world's major messaging apps encrypt your messages to ensure only you and the person you are messaging can read them. But how secure are these messages? We've taken a look at the encryption of the world's top messaging apps to see which ones can keep your private information private.

Whatsapp Collecting User's Data

Whatsapp is one of the biggest messaging services in the world, with over a billion users. But what does it do with all of that data?

The Electronic Frontier Foundation is taking to task Facebook-owned whatsapp for a new feature that automatically shares users' phone numbers with Facebook. EFF claims that Whatsapp is violating its users' privacy by not explicitly informing them that the company is collecting and sharing their info. EFF has also expressed concern that Whatsapp is enabling users to opt-out of sharing their number, but that doing so also prevents them from using some of whatsapp's features, such as sending a message to multiple users. The EFF says users should be able to opt-in to sharing their number with Facebook, but that they should not be forced to make a choice and should not be penalized for not sharing.

WhatsApp has grown by leaps and bounds since it began in 2009, reaching over 800 million users as of January 2014. The app lets you send messages, photos, videos, and voice messages to other users over WiFi or cellular connections. There are no file size limits to what you can send or receive, and message history is saved for free on
